Major Mistake

The latest page of Gone Unsupervised! took seriously too long. Like, to an INSANE amount. I try not to make excuses for things like this, but I know there's a major factor of that latest page that was, what I believe, one of the reasons why it took so long to finish.
If you take a look at the page here, one of the characters, Grace, brings along to the scene a total of fifteen books. I had the idea of that because I thought it'd be mildly funny for her to have a ridiculous amount of something. But then, in the middle of working on that page, it hit me just how much to do it was, drawing fifteen books in almost every panel (and the page has eight of them).
The whole process with the books I found to be just so tedious and motivation-draining, and it didn't help that I also was facing a major art block early on in working on the page.

Anyways, the page's done now and I learned something in the process. I'm never putting that many props in a page with that many panels ever again. ...Unless I find a shortcut or whatever, because that was boring, haha.

I have exciting news!

I'm finally making a start on my 'Gone Unsupervised!' procect! Actually, I released the first page on the 15th of February and the latest (third) one just a couple days ago, so this entry is actually late, haha...
So far, progress is good. I've got a bunch of scenarios planned for this series, and concept art should be easy since the setting for it is based on real life, so I know I won't get stuck.

Here's where you can read it so far:

I'll even post updates for this on social media, so you can keep up with my stuff on there, too:

(P.S. Also, normally I'd upload to my comics site first, but I'm deciding to update it when I've finished with the whole short, this time. Also, I'm considering other webcomic hosting sites too, such as Tapastic, Webtoon and/or Comic Fury)

Starting Again

It was my birthday earlier this week (on the 10th of December) and one of the gifts I received was a sketchbook. With that sketchbook, I've decided to use it for thumbnailing my comic pages. I thought it would be nice to have a focused place to have all my thumbnail drawings, and I guess it'd be cool to flip through all the work once I've got a decent amount of pages filled.
This was from one of my aunts on my dad's side
I'm starting with my 'Gone Unsupervised!' project, of course. I'll show the thumbnails I've done for one short here. It won't be a huge spoil since this one is a remake of an already existing short, so enjoy!

Although, I do feel like that before I actually get started on drawing the actual comic itself, I should set up the character reference sheets and make some concept art for the house that the characters live in, too.
I should've drawn up everyone's shoes in the lineup, but whatever...
Maybe I should do concept art as I go, as in: before anything new shows up, I'll do the concepts for them, rather than doing everything all at once. It might make the pace of creating this project much faster, but I don't know how well this might work in the long-run. Maybe because this is a more slice-of-life project, it won't be too harmful.

In the meantime, for 'Project: Mydan', I'm just working on its story and characters, still.
Those are what I have planned to do for now.

Process of drawing 12F.Ave's lineup

As pasted from my logs on my art Tumblr.

Day 1

Here we have sketches of the first four. (I actually changed French’s pose a little since I took the pic). Maybe I should make everyone’s posture as straight as possible so their heights are more accurate…

Day 2
Sketches of the second four are now here!
Fixed up some of the first four’s poses to have them be standing more straight so their heights are more accurate, too. Also wow, I did not know how actually tall some of these guys were. (The final four of the house actually contain the most middle-heightened people in this group, haha)

Day 3
The sketches of the final four are complete! (Thinking about giving 2.0 & Barley some more height, tho. I dunno, yet)

Here’s how the whole lineup’s looking so far…
Also, here’s some context for the heights (that blue rectangle is a 30cm ruler, btw)

Attempting 'Gone Unsupervised!'

Because of all the plot stuff I'm still working on with Project: Mydan, I'm going to be drawing up another project in the meantime. That comic project is titled 'Gone Unsupervised!', which follows the more humorous scenarios experienced by these twelve weird teenagers who all live in the same house.

I don't really have a title design for this, yet

The twelve began as a group of characters I created when I was twelve, and at around that time I had no friends in school, so I used those characters as a way to cope. They've stuck by my side all throughout high school (and I have great friends now).

The comic format from 2020.
Also, notice its prototype title, 'No Adult Supervision!'
which I changed because it was too long.

Starting from 2020, I've actually tried making a comic strip series with them, but university got in the way and I didn't plan the whole proect out very well, so I stopped. I tried again to make a comic series with these guys back in 2022 and I stopped after one comic for all the same reasons.

The new attempt in 2022. I plan to divert from this style of
colouring when I draw it again, though.

It's nearing the end of 2025, and I'm also finished with uni, so now I have plenty of time to work on my projects again. I've also written a ton of scenarios for Gone Unsupervised!, which should keep me active for a while, and also, I'll have enough room to work on Project: Mydan in the meantime.

When it comes to working on my projects, I plan to have two going on at the same time: 1) is something more narrative-focused, and 2) are more focused on small/simple scenarios and gags, without any big story or anything. My art style isn't too complex and I find it difficult to feel burnt out with my passions, so I think I'll be fine.

Mydan's prologue and other things

The prologue for Mydan is officially complete. It took me a couple months, but I'm just happy it's done :D Although I'm proud of how it turned out in general, there are a few things that I want to change/add to help things be a bit more clear. Hopefully, I'll find time for doing that in the future, since right now I want to get started on chapter 1. I'm also thinking about doing some ending art for after each chapter, and my next task is to get started on doing that. Anyways, wishing myself luck on future progress.

The prologue is over!

On the side, I've been coming up with ideas for, as well as drawing up, some small slice-of-life/gag comics with some of my characters. I've already completed one with some characters from Gone Unsupervised, which you can view HERE. From the way that the latest comic looks, I feel like that will be the way I'll be drawing up comics under GU from now on. I've had these characters for a long time and I've always wanted to make an ongoing, consistent comic with them. I might as well make the comic process easy, even though it sacrifices some of its visual quality.

Ben (left) and Felix (right) in their first official comic together

Also, uni's back on my tail (as expected). This means that I'll have to put my projects to a lower priority for now, which sucks big time. I only have two subjects for this semester to make things a little easier for me, but I'm still not doing too hot. All I can do now is just put in more effort into focusing on uni stuff, which is hard, therefore taking some time off my projects for a bit. That's not to say my projects are going to be totally dead for some time though - things are just going to get a little slower.

Hopefully posting again!

Log 2022-03-10

So, I guess I should start actually posting here, huh. I know it's been a long while since my last post, but that doesn't mean I haven't been doing anything in the past months. And I'm happy to say, I've made some nice progress (for my standard, at least).

Here's the current status for a bunch of  my major projects right now:

Gone Unsupervised!
Good news for this one: I'm actually drawing up the pages right now! This one's a long-term laid-back project so I'm hoping to keep up for as long as I can. The characters featured in this project have been with me since 2014 and they still have a very special place in my heart to this day, so I'm ffeeling pretty confident with that statement. I've got lots of ideas for this one, and since this is a comedic slice-of-life, I don't have to worry about too much of the story and worldbuilding as much as my other stuff.

Steel House in the Prairie
This one's on hold, currently: that's because there's a shorter story that I've got in mind that actually comes before SHP. Since this is a longer and more ambitious project, I feel like starting off with a story that's a bit less compared to SHP would do me a huuge favour in terms with the quality of it. Really excited to get back to this one, though.

Mydan: Post-Beginnings
Now, here's the story that comes before SHP, as well as the main major project I'm working on right now. Unfortunately, I'm still not past chapter 1 of the story, but I guess that's because I still want clarity on the basics of the story surrounding our narrative. I don't want exactly to "try too hard" with this story since this will be my first, but to keep it from being forgettable, I'll try gather some inspiration from the more simplistic stories of older video games.

The Side Effects of Outer Space Loneliness
This one is nothing more than a casual side-project. I plan for this to only be 24 parts long with a more simplistic art style. I'll just work on this whenever, but despite its lacking qualities, I still find myself enjoying working on this small project. Fun fact: I've had the concept of this strip series in mind since 2018!

Gone Unsupervised! - Log #017

Will this finally be the time? ‘Cause it’s been waiting too damn long!

GODDAMN. It’s been ages since I’ve made my last update on this project. But, I’ve got some good news. Now, I believe it’s coming back. Hiatus could be over and I’m feeling pretty motivated right now.

Here’s the game plan: I’m gonna start off “cheap”. Like, I’ll make the official pages with low-effort material (like plain paper n stuff) and it doesn’t matter if the scanning looks kinda crap. I just want to achieve the feeling of actually getting something out, and consistently. And then once I’ve gotten used to that, I’ll slowly make my way up to improving the production.

This is just going to be a simple webcomic after all, and not something to be printed or anything fancy like that. Pretty hyped!

Gone Unsupervised! - Log #016

My pencil case has been found!

Good news, my pencil case with all my inking stuff has been found! That means I can hopefully get back to working on this project. But first, there are some things I want to get out the way before anything…

Firstly, there’s completing all the major pages of this project’s website that I’ve been working on. You can view it >>here<<, although it’s still a work in progress. Second off, I want to be able to plan the first few pages’ scripts, too. I don’t want to come into this unprepared again.

I should also mention that I’m working on my final assignment for Winter School, which is keeping me pretty busy right now. Not to mention, the new semester’s starting, and I don’t want to come in disorganised, either. Yeah, life’s a bit busy right now. And that’s all I want to say, really.

Gone Unsupervised! - Log #015

My pencil case is lost!!!

Firstly, sorry it’s been a while again. But I guess, it’s safe to say that I’m pretty close to drawing up this project. But my pencil case is lost! And this is a comic project I really want to try drawing traditionally. Sucks!

Gone Unsupervised! - Log #014

Surprise! (sorry this log is late again…)

So I feel like I’m gonna get started actually drawing up this project, but it’ll be pretty different to how the prototype comics were drawn. I’m doing it traditionally. Y'know, with paper and ink(ing pens). I feel like, since this is a comic with dumb things just happening, with no real story or anything, I want this to be easy to produce.

The book I'm gonna draw this project in

I’m not 100% confident with my traditional inking skills yet, but I believe that the more I get used to it, the better I’ll be (obviously). And I’m pretty sure, since this is my first comic project that I’m actually drawing up, I’ll want to begin by not having to worry too much about colours n’ whatnot. Pretty excited to get this thing started (again!) Let’s see how far I’ll go.
My current inking skills. It's not the best...

Gone Unsupervised! - Log #013

Making some progress...

Firstly, sorry about not updating at all last Sunday. I was really hoping to get the script for one of my projects completed (which hadn't been completed until a couple days ago). Well, at least now that that's done, I can finally get back to this project. I'm starting to plan out the first couple scripts. Hope to get a good chunk of them done by the end of this week!

Gone Unsupervised - Log #011

Uni’s kickin’ my ass (and that’s probably my fault)

As I should've mentioned already on this blog, I'm a student at university. Right now, due to some of my bad working habits of mine, I've called off some project work. But, I have tried thinking of ways I can improve on that, which is good.

This week, I can't say I've done much on this project because of uni, but I do recall writing up a few scripts for some of the chapters I've planned out. Hope to continue my progress once uni stuff's cooled down.

Again, I apologise for the lack of progress this week!

Gone Unsupervised! - Log #010

I’M BACK.

Happy to say that I’ve gotten back to this project again! And y’know why? I’ve finally come up with a new title for this series. I’m changing it from “No Adult Supervision” to “Gone Unsupervised”. Still keeps the same sorta feel, it’s just as straight to the point as its predecessor, and feels less overwhelming to say, at least from my opinion. However, I did have to sacrifice my play on the “No Junk Mail” sign… Big shame.

Aside from that, I've also decided to create a website for this project. Honestly, it's about time, too. I'm doing it on Neocities, and it's looking pretty good so far. See it here, if you want!

Also happy to say that I’ve also come up with some new script ideas, which is good! Once I’ve written a couple of them down, and figured out the order of some of the scripts, I should be good to start drawing the comic up again. Very excited. Hope I don’t let myself down, this time!

No Adult Supervisioin! - Log #009

Still working on a better title, but I’ll stick with what I’ve got for now

For a bit of a while now, I’ve been trying to think up a stronger title than “No Adult Supervision!” Yeah, it’s straight to the point and describes the entire premise of the series in three words, but man, that’s a lot of syllables.

Usually stronger titles will go for, at most, 5. And some will be intentionally long/full of syllables, like titles that are a phrase or a sentence.

I’m hoping to come up with one quickly, because I don’t want a weird title-change like 10+ pages, or even 5+ pages into the series.

No Adult Supervision! - Log #008

NAS! is available to read on ComicFury

I just wanted to experiment with its layout, and it’s pretty cool.  My favourite feature so far is how you can add an extra punchline or joke or something when you hover your mouse over the image!

Latest CF entry:

I've already gotten started with this project, so I'm just gonna bulk upload what I've got so far. This is still a new project, and my first (at least, in a long time), so I dunno the upload schedule, yet. That's all I wanna say, really.

No Adult Supervision! - Log #007

And NOW I actually return!

Now that my holidays have started, I can finally dedicate my time to this series! I’ll pick up the pace from now on (or at least up until my holidays end…)
